Tip of the Day: Double Standards
Now, we all know how easy it is to go from bad to worse, but it’s funny how many nuances there are to a good old no-win situation.
For example, we are in a relationship, and there’s an issue. I bring up the issue, and suddenly, I’m waaay “too much.” But if you don’t address the issue yourself, it persists, and we both suffer.
Or, we work together, and you’re the project lead who does everything but lead. If I take initiative, I’m criticized for going over your head. But if you fail to make decisions and lead, the whole burden eventually falls on me anyway.
So, if I do something, I get the heat. If you don’t do anything, I’m still stuck in the hot seat. And somehow, I’m expected to take responsibility both for my actions and your inaction.
I am being held responsible for something you haven’t even done.
Kinda like that old idiom: damned if you do, damned if you don’t – just much, much worse.
