Do you ever catch the blues for no reason? Yesterday was a day like that for me, and I realized that not only was I sad, but I also started noticing sad things everywhere around me – in the silence, in the noise, in the words.
Like a Fish Out of Water
Have you ever noticed that some expressions carry an inherent sadness in them? Like down in the dumps, which means to be sad or depressed. Or like a fish out of water, feeling uncomfortable and totally out of place?
Today’s topic is “sad” idioms, or idioms that evoke the feeling of sadness, if you prefer. For more info on idioms and various idiom topics, please check out some of our previous posts. And for a bit of fun – to lift your spirits from all this sorrow – check out the game below.
The game contains ten sentences with “sad” idioms. Your goal is to guess the missing word in each idiom to complete the game. Each entry will provide you with feedback and the definition of the idiom. At the end, you’ll receive your score and the opportunity to replay the game.
Here’s a little tip: you’ll need the American spelling of “spilled.”
