Worlds Apart I – Adjectives Unleashed
I was rummaging through my old papers yesterday, and I stumbled upon an old exercise that used to give a lot of headaches to my students while I was teaching Business English.
It’s about adjectives that use prefixes to create antonyms (words of opposite meaning). For example:
| Prefix | Adjective |
|---|---|
| un | steady |
| in | active |
| im | practical |
| il | logical |
| ir | responsible |
| dis | honest |
| non | existent |
| a | political |
I thought some of you might benefit from this exercise, so I made a little game in case you wish to practice.
Since they don’t call me the Ubiquitous Overlord for no reason, the practice includes a bit of a hardcore challenge – 100 adjectives that need to be paired with their respective prefixes to turn them into antonyms.
It’s rather simple: for each given adjective, write the correct prefix to get the correct form. The game counts the current streak and the best streak (but only in one session – if you refresh it, the streaks are lost).
Keep adding the correct prefixes to reach 100 antonyms.
It’s as simple as that. 🤪
Good luck!
