There’s No Greater Inspiration – Both to You and Others – Than Being Who You Are

  • POV

Inspiration really is everywhere.

Today, I met up with my primary school bestie after almost ten years.

We spent almost every single day together for eight years, but then life happened – we went to different classes in high school, found different interests, slowly drifted apart.

Life crossed our paths every now and then from that moment on, but it was always some random encounter ending in “We must repeat that.”

Things didn’t change even a few years ago when we realized that her (now) best friend used to work for me. Although, I have to admit – that was really funny. 🤣

So, there we were, in the middle of the conversation, when somehow the talk about my grandma ended up mentioning her best friend from high school.

She brushed off the subject, shrugged her shoulders, and said they weren’t friends anymore.

I apologized because I didn’t know that and didn’t want to spoil the moment with difficult topics, but she explained that her friend had a rough patch in life from which she couldn’t recover, and which had left her bitter, unhappy, and resentful to the point of burning all bridges with her loved ones.

I was sorry to hear that, and my friend wavered a moment before continuing.

“Yes, I’m sorry too. We really tried to help her, but at one moment, she told me: ‘I can’t believe that you have such a great job. I was always smarter than you, and better in school, and I could have finished any study I wanted. And now, I don’t even have a real job, and you never had a day unemployed.’

My friend told me that was the final straw, and she said to her – verbatim:

“Do you really think that school or our past defines who we are? You cannot compare yourself to me. I studied what I love, I have a job that I love, and I’m great at what I do – because I love it. I am sorry for everything that’s happened to you, and I will help you any way I can, but I will not feel guilty for being happy just because you aren’t.”

If that’s not life goals, I don’t know what is. 🥹

I looked at my friend for a while, and thinking, “What an inspiration!” ❤️

I am so genuinely happy for her. ❤️

How many people can say the same for themselves?

Can you?
