What I Learned While Redefining My Business (Twice) Recently, I had a conversation about pivoting…
Are you outstanding?
The following text is the transcript for the video embedded below.
When I was a child, I always excelled at everything. If I wasn’t the best, I was in the top three. And if I had a really bad day, I was in the top five.
I used to love that. I’d come home from school, all excited to share my wins, and my mom used to say: “That’s nice dear, but it’s not nice to stand out.”
And now, so many years later, I’m thinking…. what a sh*tty thing to say to a child.
Because you know what’s actually not nice? It’s not nice to brag. It’s not nice to show off. It’s not nice to put yourself up just to tear other people down.
But it sure as hell is nice to stand out.
And you know what else? If you happen to be outstanding in even one field – no matter how trivial it may seem – you owe it to yourself, and you owe it to the world, to stand out.
Because when you shrink yourself to fit the room, you’re settling for a world of mediocrity. And trust me when I tell you, you are setting yourself up for lifelong misery.
So don’t shrink yourself. Stand the f*ck out.
